Peter Hamilton, Reality Dysfunction Review

After wading through Peter Hamilton's six volume trilogy it seems prudent to suggest to potential readers that a willingness to skim whenever the content density drops – a regrettably frequent occurrence – greatly enhances what is otherwise an interesting story. The series starts with the two part Reality Dysfunction, followed by the two part Neutronium Alchemist, and finishes with the two part Naked God. If you don’t have tons of free time, or an incredible speed reading ability, a hefty amount of content skimming will help you to balance the value of your time against the value of the content. I certainly hope Mr. Hamilton got paid by the word.

Time and a again I found myself wondering whether Mr. Hamilton didn’t in fact use some content generation software to spin out his endless supporting paragraphs.

The ultimate reward of making it to the last hundred pages was modest. I was left feeling that the resolution was more fitting to a self-indulgent daydream fantasy than a well architected and plausible concept resolution. The hero acquires god-like powers; re-architects the universe to resolve all crises; and marries the girl before heading into the sunset to live happily ever after.
